What are Special Educational Needs?

How Carlton can support your child

Carlton provides a stimulating, varied and balanced curriculum for all children irrespective of race, gender, religion or belief, background, special educational need or disability, we are extremely proud of our diverse school. We understand that in addition to quality first teaching for all children, we may need to change the curriculum, environment and teaching and learning methods to help accommodate children with SEND to ensure they are learning and making progress that is suitable for them.

Staff regularly take part in training and CPD with the support of the SENCO to ensure that best practice runs throughout the whole school, this includes managing medical conditions such as asthma and allergies

Our school building does have stone stairs and steps however our school is an accessible school as we have a lift to all levels. Carlton has access to an evacuation chair so we can ensure all children are able to exit the building quickly should there be a fire alarm. We also have a disabled toilet that is accessible if required.

All classes have an Educational Teaching Assistant in addition to the class teacher who will work with pupils who have SEND if necessary. The school also has a pastoral leader who can offer support for Mental Health through nurturing work with children. We also provide extracurricular activities for all children which include Breakfast Club and after school extracurricular activities. Children also experience a variety of visits and visitors.

How we address any concerns

At Carlton, we continually monitor and assess the learning and progress of all children and we make sure we follow the guidance of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014). If we have concerns about your child’s learning we will talk with you as soon as possible and discuss strategies to put in place to support your children such as extra or different equipment, interventions or nurture work. Meetings are also carried out throughout the year between the SENCO and parents to ensure that children’s progress is kept up to date. A My Support Plan (MSP) or Health Care Plan may be written with you and we may ask for further advice from other professionals such as School Nursing and Educational Psychologists. These plans will be reviewed with you on a term basis at least.

All children develop at their own pace but if your child shows significant concern, and has the most complex or severe needs, a request may be made to the Local Authority, which will result in a more detailed assessment being carried out. This is a legal process where the Local Authority will look at all the information and decide whether an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) is required. This a document that describes your child’s needs and what needs to be done by Education, Health and Social Care to ensure those needs are being met.

Health Care Plans

Health Care plans are put into place at Carlton for children with allergies and health conditions. These Health Care Plans are in place with emergency contacts for the teacher to access in case of an emergency, along with directions. For example, a nut allergy would have directions on how to administer an epi-pen or Pirition.

Health care plans are composed with the teacher and parents, and if needed a nursing team to ensure they are an efficient document.

Admissions for pupils with SEND

Children are admitted to the school through the Kirklees Local Authority Admissions Policy in accordance with the Equality Act 2010. We welcome children with a range of SEND at Carlton providing we are able to meet their needs effectively and provide effective education for them. We encourage all potential families to visit the school before applying for a place at Carlton.

Complaints

At Carlton, we want to work with our parents to create a calm and fair community. We are always doing our best to support your family but if at times you are unhappy then please speak to Miss Hewitt or the headteacher in first instance. A concern or complaint can be made in person, in writing or by telephone if the issue remains unresolved, the next step is to make a formal complaint. What is The Local Offer?

The Local Offer has been developed as part of the 2014 Children and Families Act. It aims to provide information on education, health and social care provisions available for disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs, in a way that can be accessed quickly and easily. Kirklees Council is working with parents, young people, schools, colleges, early years providers and health services to produce the Local Offer.
