Intent

At Carlton Junior and Infant School, we aim to foster a deep understanding of history through a well-structured curriculum that adheres to the National Curriculum and EYFS guidelines. Our intent is to inspire pupils to investigate and understand the past, fostering a sense of identity and cultural awareness. We provide opportunities for pupils to explore significant historical events and figures, encouraging them to make connections between history and their lives today. We seek to instil a passion for history that will encourage lifelong learning and critical thinking. Our history education will enable pupils to appreciate their own heritage, understand different cultures, and recognise the diverse influences that have shaped contemporary society.

Implementation

History is taught every other half term at Carlton. In EYFS and KS1, pupils begin by exploring their personal histories and significant local events, introducing key concepts such as chronology and timelines. In KS2, students delve into local history, British history, and ancient civilizations. Each topic begins with a review of prior knowledge, allowing students to connect new learning with what they already know. Lessons are interactive and encourage inquiry-based learning, with pupils engaging in investigations, analysis, and interpretation of primary and secondary sources. Teachers model effective historical inquiry and address misconceptions to promote understanding. Opportunities for self and peer assessment inform future planning and differentiation, ensuring all students are supported in their learning journey.

Impact

The impact of our history curriculum is evidenced by pupils' ability to make informed connections to the past and their understanding of its relevance to contemporary society. By the end of their time at Carlton, students will have a solid foundation in historical knowledge and skills, meeting or exceeding age-related expectations. Staff utilise ongoing assessments and observations to track progress, while pupils articulate their learning experiences enthusiastically. Our curriculum design leads to a rich understanding of historical concepts, promoting curiosity, engagement, and a desire to learn more.
